Movie Event! Remembering the Future with IRIS – Thesis Documentary Screening - AI's Role in Aiding Dementia Healthcare

  • IU Fine Arts Building (Rm 102) 1201 E 7th St Bloomington, IN 47405-5501 United States (map)

Join IU Graduate student filmmaker Jack Bassett for the premiere screening of his thesis documentary, Remembering the Future with IRIS. The film explores how dementia affects families and care communities here in Bloomington, and how innovative technologies are offering new pathways of support.

Centered around Indiana University’s IRIS project—an AI-driven robot developed with the Luddy School of Informatics in partnership with the Toyota Research Institute—the documentary follows local seniors living in Bloomington as they navigate the daily realities of memory loss. Through candid, people-driven storytelling, the film highlights the struggles, resilience, and small joys of those living with dementia, while showcasing the possibilities of technology in memory care.

This screening offers Bloomington audiences a chance to reflect on the challenges many families face right here at home, while also sparking a conversation about how research and community care can come together to improve quality of life. A post-film discussion with the filmmaker will follow, focusing on the intersection of technology, memory, and human connection.

The screening is followed by a discussion and showcase of IRIS with project leader PHD Graduate Long Jing Hsu on what she learned in the field: what caregivers say they need, where tech fits (and doesn’t), and how research can be grounded in the day-to-day lives of Bloomington families.
